Barbara Gordon, the original Batgirl, is a character in the DC Universe. She held on to that title, assisting Batman as well as solving mysteries on her own, from 1967 until 1988. During The Killing Joke The Joker shot her in the spine to send a message to her father, in the process permanently crippling her. Afterwards she hung up her cowl and became Oracle, a computer mastermind who aided Batman, the Justice League, and just about any other hero who needed her.
In the New 52 Barbara became Batgirl yet again due to The Killing Joke being removed completely from continuity.
Pre-Crisis[]
Post Crisis[]
In Justice League America/Witchblade Barabra is one of the women of the JLA temporarily gifted with the power of the Witchblade. It gives her back the power of her legs, all eight of them. Turned into a biomechanical arachnid Oracle is momentarily driven mad by power with the premise of turning the entire world into her web. After being subdued she apologizes profusely for the episode.
New 52[]
During the Swamp Thing/Animal Man event Rotworld Barbara appears as one of the survivors in the future Rotworld. She survived by injecting herself with the Man-Bat serum, thus joining The Red. She finds Alec in the batcave and saves him from getting his face eaten by an undead Batman. She then leads him to the sanctuary at Arkham, and helps him as best she can at constructing a superweapon to extinguish The Rot. In the final battle against The Rot she is still alive when Swamp Thing and Animal Man leap back in time.
